Augustus E. ‘Gus’ Mellott, Jr. 79

of 407 West Market Street, Clearfield died on Friday, August 13, 2004 at Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College.

He was born on August 25, 1924 in Clearfield, a son of the late Augustus E. and Lettie E. (Ennis) Mellott, Sr.

Mr. Mellott retired in 1984 from Bell Telephone of PA after 37 years. With his son Robert, he owned and operated Budget Communications for 10 years, closing in 1995.
He served with the U.S. Army in the 88th Infantry Division in North Africa and Italy and was a demolition and mine warfare expert spending 25 months overseas. On October 2, 1944 he was wounded in action at Castel del Rio, Italy. He was awarded a Purple Heart, European, Italian and Middle East Campaign with three Bronze Battle Stars, the Meritorious Unit Citation, French Croix DeGuerre Unit Medal, the American Campaign Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the WWII Victory Medal.
Mr. Mellott was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, a former member and past president of the Clearfield Kiwanis Club, a life member of the Telephone Pioneers, the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks #540 and the Clearfield Fire Company #1. He is a past president of Fire Co. #1 and the Clearfield Fire Department.
He was also a member of the 88th Division Association, the Clearfield F. Michael Sicks Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1785 and the Clearfield American Legion John Lewis Shade Post #6.
He was a member of the Clearfield County Fair Board for many years, having managed the fair in 1964 and 1965 and serving as race secretary for 18 years.
He also helped to organize the Clearfield County Muscular Dystrophy Association.

He is survived by three children,

Robert E. Mellott and wife Lisa Port Matilda
Michael H. Mellott and wife Michele Limestone

five grandchildren,

a sister and two brothers,
Jean Witherow Clearfield
Harry E. Mellott Clearfield
Richard R. Mellott OH

and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joanne T. (Thorn) Mellott on January 15, 2004 and whom he married March 17, 1951 in Clearfield.

Funeral services will be held at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Clearfield on Monday at
11:00 A.M. with Rev. Kevin Locker officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery, Clearfield.

Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the members of the Clearfield American Legion and VFW Posts.

Friends will be received at the funeral home on Sunday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM and on Monday from
10 - 11:00 AM at the church.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 121 S. Second Street, Clearfield or to the Clearfield Fire Company Number 1, 108 E. Cherry Street, Clearfield.
