Benson Lingle

Benson H. Lingle, 89

of Shawville died on Friday, February 2, 2007 at DuBois Regional Medical Center - West.

He was born on March 24, 1917 at the homestead in Shawville, a son of the late Warren and Maggie (Livingston) Lingle.

A trailblazer and business builder, over the years he formed Belford Coal Company, Hamlin Coal Company, River Valley Construction Company, Lingle Coal Company, Linglewood Lodge, Shawville Coal Company and with his brother Ralph, B & R Equipment Company.
In the late 70's his firms were the largest individually owned coal companies in the state and he provided employment for over 350 field and office personnel.

Quick to adopt new innovations he was one of the first in the state to import snowmobiles and with his son Robert, formed Harbor One, at that time the only snowmobile dealership in this area.
His helicopters, an early bubble type and his Bell Jet ranger, "The Spirit of Shawville" were in the 60's and 70's about the only of their kind in the county.

An unparallel host, in addition to many business clients he enjoyed friends at hunts and get togethers at Linglewood Lodge. His annual Game Dinner which he hosted from the late 70's through the 80's became legendary.

He worked with Penn State's wildlife division developing a white tail breeding program at Linglewood. A fenced game preserve and a shooting reserve were his favorite hobbies. He thoroughly enjoyed his large acreages, was a fly fisherman and spent many hours by jeep and horseback planning and maintaining his properties.

Politically active, he held fundraisers at the lodge and campaigned for the candidates of his choice. He was a guest at the White House under President Reagan and the Governor's Mansion of Dick Thornburg. He provided helicopter tours for William Scranton, Sr. during his term of office.

He was a personal friend and often guest of Rex Humbard and Jerry Falwell. His philanthropies' included the Humbard & Falwell ministries, Rev. Bill Shade's, Camp of the Nations in the Poconos, Dr. Schuller's Crystal Cathedral, Christian Missionary Alliance Church Youth Chapel, the CMA Church, Rev. Bob Myers Gospel Center, in addition to area churches and organizations.

Mr. Lingle was a former volunteer for the American Heart Association.
He was one of the founders of the Pennsylvania Coal Mining Association, a Lifetime Director Emeritus of the Pennsylvania Coal Association and was awarded Conservationist of the Year by the Pennsylvania Medical Association.

He is survived by his first wife, the mother of his son, Geraldine Greenlee of Johnstown, his second wife Peg Mills of Clearfield, and his companion, confidant and third wife, Vera J. Lingle of Clearfield,

and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Robert R. Lingle in 1975, five brothers, Burton, Donald, Ralph, Clifford and Scott Lingle, four sisters Lois Sayers, Madelyn Williams, Georgie Knepp, Betty Gross, and infant sister Mary Susie, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield on Tuesday at
11:00 A.M. with Dr. Duane A. White officiating.

Friends will be received at the funeral home on Monday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM and on Tuesday from 10-11:00 AM.
