Charles Zitzelberger

July 26, 1931 — January 9, 2022

Charles F. Zitzelberger Sr., 90, of Clearfield died on Sunday, January 9, 2022 at Colonial Courtyard, Clearfield.

He was born on July 26, 1931 in Clearfield, a son of the late Harry P. Sr. and Nevada K. (Kennedy) Zitzelberger.

Mr. Zitzelberger graduated in 1949 from St. Francis High School where he was a good basketball player. He entered into the US Air Force and served 4 years during the Korean conflict, first being trained in Germany and then stationed at Burtonwood Air Force Base, England, as an IBM machine operator. Upon his discharge, Mr. Zitzelberger returned to Pennsylvania and was employed most recently at Penelec IBEW 459 for 28 years.

He enjoyed Boy Scouts, being a scout master for Troop 9 and had earned his Eagle Scout rank while in Germany. Recently, he had been honored by the local Troop 9 scouts and was formerly presented his Eagle Scout award. He also liked to watch the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers and also held a real estate license. Mr. Zitzelberger was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, Clearfield, the Clearfield American Legion and a Third Degree member of the Clearfield Knights of Columbus. Above all, Mr. Zitzelberger enjoyed his family.

He is survived by his wife, Mary (Mullen) Zitzelberger whom he wed November 28, 1953; four children, Charles 'Rick' 'Zeke' Zitzelberger Jr. and wife Leslie of Clearfield, Helen Howell and husband Colin of Clearfield, Rita Crotzer and husband Dennis of Clearfield, and Katherine Motter and husband Robert of Blandon; nine grandchildren, Charles III, Christopher and wife Andrea, James, Mary Jane, Margaret Anne, Juliana and husband Tony, Marisa and husband Travis, Allison and husband Eric, and Andrew and fiance Alexandra; and five great grandchildren, Atlas, Rowan, Reese, Aidan, and Anneliese.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Paula Barrett; a granddaughter, Lindsay; and three brothers, Harry P. Zitzelberger, Jr., Edmund J. Zitzelberger, William Zitzelberger.

Mass of Christian burial will be said at the St. Francis Catholic Church, Clearfield on Saturday, January 15, 2022 at 10 AM with Fr. Brandon Kleckner as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Calvary Cemetery, Clearfield.

Military honors will be accorded at cemetery.

Friends will be received at the Beardsley Funeral Home and Crematory, Clearfield on Friday, January 14, 2022 from 6-8 PM and on Saturday from 9-9:30 AM . MASKS WILL BE REQUIRED AT THE FUNERAL HOME AND AT CHURCH FOR MASS.

A Christian Vigil service will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 5:45 PM.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Francis School, 212 South Front Street, Clearfield, PA 16830 or the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105-3678 .

The family also wishes to thank the staff at Colonial Courtyard and also Julie Hillyer for their great care. Also, thank you to Troop 9 of Clearfield for taking the time and formerly awarding Mr. Zitzelberger with his earned Eagle Scout honor.
