Charlotte 'Tootie' Crain

March 30, 1929 — December 20, 2024

Charlotte A. 'Tootie' Crain, aged 95, passed away on Friday, December 20, 2024 after a short stay at The Fountains in DuBois, PA.

Charlotte was born March 30, 1929, in DuBois, the daughter of William and Lydia (Johnson) Logan. She attended DuBois schools and graduated with the Class of 1947. On July 27, 1947, she married Billy P. Crain who preceded her in death on March 27, 2011. Charlotte and Billy attended National Bible Institute in Manhatten, New York City before moving to the Tuscarora Indian Reservation in Niagara County, NY, then to Niagara Falls and Buffalo, NY. In 1954 the family returned to the DuBois area, settling in Luthersburg.

Charlotte was a life-long homemaker who also worked with her husband in his insurance business teaching agents and managing his offices in subsequent moves to Brookville and Mercer, PA and Easton, MD.

Upon retiring with her husband to Clearfield in 1989, Charlotte was an active member of the Clearfield First Baptist Church. Charlotte served as the church treasurer and taught the adult women's Sunday School class. She was also a member of the Christian Women's Club and the Strong Women exercise program. In addition to raising seven children, Charlotte and Billy were foster parents to over seventy children through the Bair Foundation, a Christian based foster care and adoption ministry.

Charlotte's life was a testimony of her steadfast faith in Christ which began in her teenage years. Born at the start of the Great Depression, one of five girls, she lost her father at age four. Throughout her high school years, there was the trauma and rationing of WWII. Charlotte experienced many hard times but never complained. She trusted in and loved to tell of God's faithfulness and provision. Queried this Thanksgiving, she was most thankful for "the family God gave me." Charlotte was adored by family and friends and will be greatly missed.

Charlotte is survived by 6 children, Peggy (Timothy) Durant of Clearfield, PA, Judy Crain of Brookville, PA, Billy (Betty Kay) Crain of Port St. Joe, FL, JoAnn (Mark) McKinley of Brookville, PA, Timothy (Sylvia) Crain of Clearfield, PA, and James (Julie) Crain of Cambridge, MD; foster son James (June) Fleming of Charlestown, SC; one sister, C. Ann 'Dolly' Callahan of Winter Springs, FL; 16 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents; a son, John Mark Crain; a great grandson, Nicholas Scott Casher; and three sisters, Ruth Altman, Kay Culver, and Jeanne Thompson.

A funeral service will be held at the Clearfield First Baptist Church on Saturday, December 28, 2024 at 11AM. Friends and family will be received at the church before the service from 9 AM - 11 AM.
