Dr. Fred Pease, 92 formerly of Clearfield, died on Monday, July 4, 2005 at Hillhaven Nursing Home in Beltsville, MD after a long illness.
He was born on August 15, 1912 in Steelton, PA, the son of Italian immigrants, the late Luigi and Louisa (Veltri) Pease. He was the sixth sibling of nine children, seven boys and two girls.
He studied pre-med at Temple University in Philadelphia and then completed his formal education at the University of Rome, Italy. A Doctorate of Medicine was conferred on him in November 1937.
In 1938 Dr. Pease interned at Clearfield Hospital. In 1939 he became an assistant surgeon to Dr. S.J. Waterworth and his son Dr. Andrew J. Waterworth.
Upon the sudden demise of Dr. S.J. Watherworth in June of 1940, Dr. Pease remained in Clearfield for a short while, then return to Steelton, PA where he opened a short lived practice.
Dr. Pease served a second brief internship at Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital, Johnstown, PA before he was commissioned as a first lieutenant in the Army Medical Corps.
In August 1942, as a member of the Fifth Army, he was involved in campaigns in North Africa and Italy. He was discharged as a captain in 1946.
After the war, Dr. Pease returned to Clearfield and opened a medical practice on Cherry Street with Dr. Andrew J. Waterworth and Dr. George C. Covalla.
He married Anne Sheridan Waterworth, the daughter of Dr. S.J. Waterworth in November 1947. She preceded him in death on August 9, 1979.
Dr. Pease performed surgery at Clearfield Hospital but is mostly remembered for his work
in obstetrics. He proudly delivered three generations.
Dr. Pease retired in March of 1981 after practicing medicine in Clearfield for 35 years. He spent his remaining years of his life with his son Samuel and family in Hyattsville, MD.
During his retirement he enjoyed traveling and woodworking.
During his longevity, Dr. Pease was a member of the AMA, the Pennsylvania Medical Society, Maryland Medical Society, Kiwanis, Clearfield Curwensville Country Club, American Legion, VFW, BPO Elks, the Knights of Columbus and the Sons of Italy.
He is survived by a son, Samuel J. Pease of Hyattsville, MD, two grandchildren, Alicia and Daniel and a sister, Dorothy Piccolo of Mechanicsburg.
Mass of Christian Burial will be said at St. Francis Catholic Church, Clearfield on Friday at 10:30 A.M. with Msgr. H. Desmond McGee, Jr. as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Calvary Cemetery, Clearfield.
