Emma Guarino

January 16, 1924 — October 28, 2021

Emma Guarino, 97, of Curwensville passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 28, 2021.

She was born on January 16, 1924, in Curwensville, a daughter of the late Joseph and Maria (Creonte) Errigo.

Emma was the daughter of Italian immigrants, born and raised in Curwensville in a family of nine children. Emma lived in her childhood home for ninety-six years and raised her three children in that same home. Throughout her adult life Emma remained close to her six brothers who lived in various parts of the country and her sister who resided in Curwensville.

Emma’s love for Curwensville is evident both in her employment and the volunteer positions in which she served. She was employed as the Curwensville Borough Secretary for forty-two years, retiring at the age of eighty-four.

Emma volunteered as treasurer of the Curwensville Alumni Association for a total of seventy-five years. This was truly her favorite endeavor, and every year she looked forward to helping plan the annual Alumni Banquet, which included awarding scholarships to graduating seniors. She was also active in the Curwensville Women’s Club for seventy seven years, where she participated in various committees and served as president for two consecutive years.

Emma’s family grew to love her traditional homemade Italian meals like pasta, sauce, meatballs and braciola. Family and friends looked forward to her traditional Italian cookies during the holidays.

Every Spring Emma would visit several garden shops to put in the colorful annual flowers which she cared for. Emma loved fashion from an early age and was always impeccably dressed whether dining out with her husband or just going to the grocery store.

Emma is survived by three children, Fred Guarino III and wife Mitzi of Waynesboro, Chuck Guarino and wife Betsy of Curwensville, and Meri Jo Beirig and partner John Wyka of Sterling, MA; and four grandchildren, Fred Guarino IV, Abby Guarino, Trevor Bierig, and Ariel Bierig and husband Robert Ryan.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-four years, Fred, and eight siblings; Patsy, Tony, Yetsi, Edward, Frank, Josie, Katie, and Robert.

Funeral services will be held at the Beardsley Funeral Home and Crematory, Curwensville on Tuesday, November 2, 2021 with Fr. Steve Collins officiating. Interment will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Curwensville.

Friends will be received at the funeral home on Monday, November 1, 2021 from 4-7 PM and on Tuesday, November 2, 2021 from 10-11 AM.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Curwensville Alumni Association for the scholarship fund. Donations can be mailed to The Curwensville Alumni Association, PO Box 352, Curwensville, PA 16833.
