Rev. Lawrence Augustus Vallimont, CR, 85
died Monday, October 20, 2003 at the Mountain Laurel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Clearfield following a lengthy illness.
Fr. Larry was born in Frenchville, Pennsylvania on September 17, 1918 a son of the late Felix and Mary (Kohlbecker) Vallimont. After attending public and high school, he studied mechanical engineering for two years from 1938-1940 and worked in various jobs such as coal mining, truck driving, timber cutting and farming. In 1941 he was drafted into the US Army and served for five years. He then moved to St Mary, Kentucky, where he attended St. Marys College and began his studies for the priesthood. He professed first vows with the Congregation of the Resurrection on September 8, 1950 in Dundas, Ontario and final vows on September 8, 1953 in Mentorella, Italy. He attended St. Peters Seminary in London, Ontario and the Gregorian University in Rome, Italy. He was ordained to the priesthood in Rome on February 14, 1954.
For several years, Fr. Larry was both chaplain to the British and U.S. Forces in Bermuda, as well as hospital chaplain. He was administrator of Stella Maris Parish in Bermuda from 1955-1968. From 1968 to 1972 he served as chaplain of Memorial Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1972, Fr. Larry was assigned to the Congregations mission in Resende, Brazil. He ministered there until 1983, when he returned to the United States to care for his sick brother. In 1992, Fr. Larry was appointed associate pastor of the Congregations new mission at Immaculate Conception Parish, Jamaica. In 1998 he retired to Frenchville, where he lived with his nephew, Pat Fitzgibbon.
He is survived by many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.
Mass of Christian Burial will be said at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Frenchville on Friday at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Samuel G. Bungo as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Saint Mary Catholic Cemetery, Frenchville.
Friends will be received at the church on Thursday from 7-9:00 PM and on Friday from 9 - 11:00 AM.
