George J. Thacik, 89 of Curwensville died on Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at his residence.
He was born on April 24, 1918 in Curwensville, a son of the late John and Catherine (Mahute) Thacik. He was a 1937 graduate of Curwensville High School and played on the 1936 Curwensville Championship Football Team. Following high school, he attended the George Washington University in Washington, DC. He served during World War II in the Pacific Theatre with the US Army. Mr. Thacik was employed at the former Robinson Clay Products and later retired from Brown Brothers Trucking after 20 years of service. George had a love for horticulture and devoted much of his free time to creating rare hybrids of award winning rhododendrons. Along with his wife Anne, he created Woodhurst Nursery at their home in Curwensville. Today, Woodhurst continues to boast hundreds of rhododendrons, many of them one of a kind, and an assortment of rare trees from all over the world. Since its inception, hundreds of people both locally and abroad have visited his home and enjoyed the beauty of George's labor of love.
He is survived by a stepson, Claude Richard Bloom and wife Virginia of Clearfield, 2 grandchildren, Rich Bloom and wife Barb of Cresco and Jennifer Hoover and husband Shad of Curwensville, four great grandchildren, Nicholas, Anne, Tessa, Maizy, a sister in law, Helen Way of Curwensville and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Anne Smith Thacik on January 17, 1999 and whom he married May 6, 1950 in Bellefonte. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Rose Fusco and Mary A. Renninger and brothers, Andrew, Gabriel and Louis Thacik. He was the last member of his immediate family.
A memorial service will be held at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Curwensville on Saturday at 10:30 A.M. with Rev. Jay E. Jones officiating. Interment will be in the Thompson Cemetery, Glen Richey.
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Saturday from 9:30 - 10:30 AM.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Friends of the Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging, PO Box 550, Clearfield or to the Clearfield County Historical Society, 104 E. Pine Street, Clearfield.
