Harry Fred Bigler, III, 79

of 408 Sheridan Drive, Clearfield died on Thursday, November 4, 2004 at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center- Shadyside Hospital.

He was born on October 14, 1925 in Clearfield, a son of the late Harry Fred and Helen (Dufton) Bigler, Jr..

Mr. Bigler was a 1943 graduate of Clearfield High School. He served as an enlisted man in the Navy during World War II (1943-1946)having served two years in the Southwest Pacific with the Naval Seebees. Mr. Bigler received a commission in the Navy Reserves in which he was active for a number of years. He graduated from the Pennsylvania State University’s School of Mineral Industries in 1950.
Mr. Bigler was self employed during most of his working career. He and his wife operated Bigler Supply Company for ten years until he was elected Clearfield County Commissioner. During his two terms (1984-1991) he served as Chairman of the Board of Commissioners for two years. Mr. Bigler was one of the founders and Chairman of the Rural Caucus of County Commissioners and was President of the Northwestern Association of County Commissioners. During his time in office, he promoted many badly needed improvements to County Government including the reduction of the heavy debt load while keeping taxes in line. He was instrumental in the development of Bilger’s Rocks Association, a great tourist attraction and was responsible for obtaining potable water for the Coalport area.

Mr. Bigler was a member of The Presbyterian Church, Clearfield, where he served as a Deacon.

He is survived by his wife, June (Troxell) Bigler, whom he married September 29, 1973 in The Presbyterian Chruch, Clearfield.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia (Bigler)Tompkins and Marian (Bigler) Sobel.

A memorial service will be held at the Simcox Chapel of The Presbyterian Church, Clearfield on Tuesday at 11:00 A.M. with Dr. Douglas S. Pride and Mr. Richard B. Barkley officiating. Interment will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery, Clearfield.

Military honors will be accorded at the church by the members of the Clearfield American Legion and VFW Posts.

Friends will be received at the church on Tuesday from 10 until the hour of service.
