Howard C. "Dick" Gates, 87 of Curwensville died on Tuesday, December 18, 2007 at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Presbyterian Hospital.
He was born on March 13, 1920 in Clearfield, a son of the late Clinton E. and Josephine (Burdick) Gates.
Mr. Gates retired from the United States Government Printing Office, Washington, DC in 1980. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 1st Infantry Division, United States Army in the Tunisia Campaign, Invasion of Sicily, Invasion of Normandy, Northern France Campaign, Rhineland, Ardenns and Central Europe Campaign. He received the Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with two spearheads and seven bronze stars. He belonged to the United Commercial Travelers, the International Typographical Union since 1945, and a member of Local Union No. 101 at Washington, D.C., the Clearfield American Legion John Lewis Shade Post No. 6, the Robert Ferguson Post No. 842 Veteran's of Foreign Wars of Curwensville and the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks No. 540. He was also a member of the Curwensville United Methodist Church and Choir, Grampian Community Choir, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, the Woodland Senior Citizens and the Men's Prayer Breakfast Group.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille (Moss) Gates, whom he wed September 26, 1942 in Bradford, along with two sons, Donald E. Gates and wife Glinda of Jacksonville, FL, Larry J. Gates and wife Deborah of Manassas Park, VA, four grandchildren, Donna Hayes, Joey Gates, Christian Gates, Ronald Gates 10 great grandchildren, a brother and two sisters, James Gates of Bradford, Barbara Steffenson of Roseburg, OR and Sylvia Ann Cormack of Paramount, CA and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, David L. Gates, Clinton Gates, Clayton Gates and a sister Dorothy Pollock.
Funeral services will be held at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Curwensville on Friday, December 28, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Alison W. Grove officiating. Interment will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Curwensville.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the members of the Clearfield American Legion and VFW Posts Honor Guard.
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Thursday, December 27, 2007 from 2-5:00 PM and on Friday, December 28, 2007 from 10-11:00 AM.
