Hugh Hoover

Hugh "Hoot" Hoover, 85, died on Thursday, September 27, 2007 at his home in Karthaus.

He was the devoted husband of Mary ‘Jeanne’ (Peavy) Hoover to whom he was married for 63 years. Hugh was a recent member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Frenchville.

Born April 19, 1922 in Morgan Run, he was the son of the late Mabel (Hoover) Maney of Pottersdale and Clair Phillips of Morgan Run and step-son of George Maney of Pottersdale.

He graduated from Philipsburg High School with high honors and graduated from the Williamsport Technical School where he studied tool and die making.
He served his country as a telecommunication operator during World War II and was stationed in the South Pacific. Following the war, he owned and operated a deep coal mine. Later, he was employed as a Maintenance Supervisor with the Department of Forestry and retired in 1994 after 30 years of loyal service.
Hugh served as President of the Karthaus Park Association and was a charter member of Quehanna Lions Club. He served on the Quehanna Water Authority and the West Branch School Board. He was also a member of the Leigey-Renaud Post #8386 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Frenchville and a lifelong member of the Karthaus Fire Company.
Some of Hugh's talents included being a gun smith, woodworking and hunting.
Hugh was a man of extraordinary generosity and his kindness touched many lives.

In addition to his wife Jeanne, whom he wed September 30, 1944 in Frenchville, he is survived by six children, Kathy Hoover Piper and husband Wayne of Karthaus, Rosemary Hoover Workman and husband Richard of Clearfield, Michael L. Hoover of Karthaus, David K. Hoover and wife Rose of Clarence, Mary Beth Hoover Bamat and husband Craig of Karthaus, Vicki Hoover Sabol and husband Mark of Morrisdale; 17 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; a sister and brother, Mona Maney of Tonawanda, NY and Leo ‘Red’ Maney of Karthaus; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and stepfather, he was preceded in death by three sisters Valda Luciana, Joyce Phillips Fahr and Gloria Phillips and three brothers Charles Maney, George Maney, Jr. and Norman Dale Maney.

Mass of Christian Burial will be said at St. Mary Catholic Church, Frenchville on Monday at
11:00 AM with Rev. Samuel G. Bungo as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Saint Mary Catholic Cemetery, Frenchville.

Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the members of the Leigey Renaud Post 8386 Veterans of Foreign Wars Frenchville.

Friends will be received at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield on Sunday from 5-8:00 PM and on Monday 10-11:00 AM at the church.

The Rosary will be recited at the funeral home on Sunday at 4:30 PM followed by a vigil service.
