Jack A. Sloppy - Beloved Husband, Father and Grandfather
Jack A. Sloppy, age 69, of Edinboro, PA departed this life on Saturday, May 17, 2008 at Hamot Medical Center in Erie surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with myelofibrosis and leukemia. He was born in Clearfield, PA on September 21, 1938, a son of Fred and Jessie Leiby Sloppy who survive.
A 1956 graduate of Clearfield High School, he attended Indiana State Teachers College before entering military service. He was honorably discharged after 11 years combined service, including active Army Reserves and PA National Guard.
Jack was a man of great integrity and dedication to his family, God and his employer of 31 years. He was a well respected businessman and enthusiastic ambassador for Erie. He spent the last 11 winters at his winter residence in Estero, FL, and he enjoyed traveling, golfing, water volleyball, reading, NASCAR racing (a real Dale Earnhardt fan), and Penn State and Pittsburgh Steelers football. He was also an avid sports trivia buff.
He was employed by Blue Cross of Western PA for 31 years, starting as a field sales representative in Clearfield County in 1966, and retiring as Senior Director of the Northwestern PA region in Erie in 1997. He had previously worked for County National Bank in Clearfield from 1958-1966. He was a member of the Clearfield Masonic Lodge #314, the Coudersport Consistory and the Clearfield Elks. While employed at Blue Cross, he was active with numerous business and civic organizations, boards and committees, including the Erie Health Care Summit, the Blue Cross Olympic Committee in the 1980's, and Co-Advisor for the Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week (PFEW) for several years. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Erie.
Survivors include his parents, Fred and Jessie Sloppy of Clearfield; his wife Constance (Connie) Marie Whitaker Sloppy, whom he married September 9, 1961; a son, Daniel E. Sloppy and his wife Julie of Erie; a daughter, Lori A. Buzzard and her husband Don of Erie; a brother, Richard Sloppy and his wife Sandra of Clearfield; two aunts, Avanelle Whitaker of Buchanan Dam, TX and Eleanor Sloppy of Loysville, PA; four grandchildren, Aidan, Derek and Marla Marie Sloppy, and Jacob Buzzard; and two nephews, Brian and Andrew Sloppy.
Friends will be received at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Funeral services will take place at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Clearfield on Thursday at 11:00am officiated by Pastor David McIlvried of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Erie. Final resting place will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Curwensville, PA.
At the funeral home on Wednesday, the Masonic memorial service will be said at 6:15 PM followed by the Elks memorial service at 6:30 PM.
