John Bartell

April 1, 1915 — June 22, 2005

John J. Bartell, a longtime resident of Curwensville, died on Wednesday, June 22. He was 90.

Mr. Bartell died at the Altoona Regional Health Care System -Altoona Hospital Campus following complications from heart surgery.

He was born in Curwensville on April 1, 1915, the son of Lawrence and Constance Bartell.

Mr. Bartell attended Curwensville High School. Playing quarterback on the school’s football team, he frequently incurred off side penalties, thereby earning the nickname “Five Yards.”

During the 1940s, Mr. Bartell worked for Dearborn Machinery Movers in Michigan, then returned to Curwensville in 1947 to buy and manage his father’s trucking company, Bartell Transfer. From 1962 until his retirement in 1995, he was a salesman for Pennsylvania Funds Corporation.

Mr. Bartell was a charter member of the Curwensville Lions Club and the Curwensville Booster Club. As a member of the Curwensville Presbyterian Church he served as a deacon. He was an avid reader and Civil War buff.

His parents, two brothers, Nile and Eugene, and one sister, Madeline, preceded Mr. Bartell in death.

His wife of 67 years, Dorothea, of Curwensville, survives, as do a daughter, Nancy, of Carmel, Calif., a son, Gerald, of New York, NY, and several nieces, nephews and cousins in the United States and Italy.

Memorial services will be held at the Curwensville Presbyterian Church on Tuesday at 11:00 AM with Rev. Daniel T. Ledford officiating. Interment will be in the Watts Cemetery, RD Curwensville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Curwensville Public Library, 601 Beech Street, Curwensville or to charities of the donor’s choice.
