John R. Crago, Sr., 85

retired President of John R. Crago, Inc., formerly of Clearfield and most recently of Lancaster and died on Thursday, August 26, 2004 at Willow Valley Retirement Community in Lancaster

He was born on April 12, 1919 in Barnesboro, PA a son of the late John and Gwendolyn (Musser) Crago.

Having held positions with the G. C. Murphy Company and Esso Standard Oil, Mr. Crago established a successful petroleum products distributorship in Clearfield in 1945 which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1969. Having established residency in Casselberry, FL, he accepted an invitation from Lutheran World Brotherhood to assist a floundering American Indian business, Dakotah Crafts, in Sisseton, South Dakota where the Cragos spent the summer of 1971. Native Indian employees were instructed in proper displaying and packaging of the intricate and colorful beadwork expertly created by the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Indians. Merchandising methods were improved, and a bookkeeping system was initiated; mail order brochures were printed and product outlets created throughout the state.

An active member of St. John Lutheran Church of Winter Park, FL, Mr. Crago served as church Administrator for several years, taking up residency at Willow Valley Manor, Lancaster, PA in 1998. He was a member of the Clearfield Presbyterian Church.
