Joseph A. Castagnolo, 85

of Clearfield died on Friday, September 20, 2002 at Mountain Laurel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Clearfield.

He was born on October 27, 1916 in Clearfield, PA, a son of the late Tony and Tressa (Lombardo) Castagnolo.

Mr. Castagnolo, an active businessman in the community, was a tailor for 43 years having owned and operated Castagnolo's Tailoring until his retirement in 1986. During the 1970’s, he served as a sewing instructor at the Clearfield County Vocational Technical School.
As a young man, he was an avid softball player and team member of the Clearfield Moose Lodge, playing in the outfield.
He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus - Clearfield Council No. 409, the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks No. 540 of Clearfield, the Clearfield American Legion John Lewis Shade Post No. 6, the Sons of Italy Lodge, the American Association of Retired Persons.
Having served in the United States Army during World War II, he was twice wounded in action, in France on November 23, 1944 and March 18, 1945 and received two Purple Hearts. He also received the Good Conduct Medal, the Distinguished Unit Award, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with Three Bronze Stars, the French Croux De Guerre and the World War II Victory Medal.

A loving father, he and his wife Rose, of 59 years, raised five children who survive,

and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rose A. (DiSalvo) Castagnolo on June 9, 1998 and whom he married July 31, 1939 in St. Francis Church, Clearfield and also by two sisters, Mary Castagnolo and infant sister.

Mass of Christian Burial will be said at St. Francis Catholic Church, Clearfield on Monday at 10:00 AM with Msgr. H. Desmond McGee, Jr. as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Calvary Cemetery, Clearfield.

Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the members of the Clearfield American Legion and VFW Post

Friends will be received at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield on Sunday from
2 – 9:00 PM.

A Christian Vigil service will be recited on Sunday at the funeral home.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Clearfield Chapter of the American Red Cross, 309 W. Locust Street, Clearfield or to the YMCA, 21 N. Second Street, Clearfield.
