Joseph Chnupa

June 7, 1917 — January 13, 2010

Joseph J. Chnupa, 92, formerly of Mineral Springs, died Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at the Susquehanna Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Columbia, PA. A man whose life was epitomized by love and service to God, family and country, he is sadly missed by family and friends.

He was born on June 7, 1918 in Clearfield to parents Paul B. and Mary A. (Zemka) Chnupa. He was the beloved husband of Mary (Sigety) Chnupa for fifty-nine years until her death in 2000.

Prior to World War II, he served his country as a member of the U.S. Army Honor Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington, Virginia. During World War II, he again served in the military with the rank of Sergeant, leading his squad from Omaha Beach to the Remagen Bridge, where he was wounded. Returning to Clearfield at the close of World War II, he recovered and resumed work at Harbison Walker Refractories.

He is survived by two sons, Gary A. Chnupa of Lancaster and Joseph W. Chnupa of Pittsburgh; four grandchildren, Tyler Chnupa of Glen Burnie, MD, Leigh Colyer of Pittsburgh, Adam and Michelle Chnupa of Lancaster; two great granddaughters, Abagail and Izabella Jusino of Lancaster and numerous nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, an infant sister, and four brothers, John J. Chnupa of Vero Beach, FL, Paul M. Chnupa of Clearfield, Victor Chnupa of Wolf Run and Rudy Chnupa of Kerr Addition.

Funeral services will be held at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield on Tuesday at 10:00 A.M. with the Rev. Rodger J Gorton officiating. Interment will follow in the Crown Crest Memorial Park, Hyde.

Friends will be received at the funeral home on Monday from 6-8 PM and on Tuesday from 9-10 AM.
