Joseph K. Gilliland

June 15, 1947 — March 8, 2025

Joseph Kunes Woolridge Gilliland, age 77, passed away unexpectedly Saturday afternoon, March 8, 2025, at his residence in Clearfield, PA.


He was born June 15, 1947, in Clearfield, a son of the late Lynn Woolridge and ‍Violet (Kunes) Gilliland.


‍Joe attended both the Trinity United Methodist Church and the West Side Church of Christ. He enlisted in the US Armed Forces and served in active duty from 1966 to 1968 in the 8th Army, 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry. After leaving active service, he transferred into the US Army Reserve, where he served his Country until 1972, ending his service with an Honorable Discharge. He served as an Insurance Agent for the H.R. Woolridge Company of Clearfield and operated a bail bonds company for over 20 years.


In addition to participating in the United Way and Kiwanis Club, Joe was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Post 812, the Veterans' of Foreign Wars, Post 1785, and the John Lewis Shade American Legion, Post 6, all of Clearfield, PA. Joe also enjoyed spending time with his wife, Susan, at his family's cottage in Magnetawan, Canada, and dearly loved sharing the property and time on the lake with friends.


‍Joe is survived by his wife, Susan K. Hess Gilliland, and a brother, John Gilliland and his wife, Patty Pyle Gilliland, of Clearfield, PA, a stepson, Josh Daniel Gilliland, currently serving in the armed forces and stationed in Alaska, a daughter, Emilie Benedict Schreiner, of Virginia, and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind many devoted friends who will sadly miss him.


In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his sisters, Jane Gilliland of Clearfield, PA, and Judy (Gilliland) Chase, wife of the late Willilam Clark Chase, Jr. of Stevensburg, VA, and his brother, James Gilliland of Curwensville, PA.


At Joe's request, no formal services will be held. However, a Celebration of Life is planned for a future date to be determined by the family.


In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Joe's honor to a charity of your choosing.


Beardsley Funeral Home & Crematory, Clearfield is in charge of arrangements.
