Kenneth E. McMillen, 81, of Clearfield died on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at Clearfield Hospital.
He was born on March 9, 1927 in Oil City, a son of the late Calvin and Mildred (Gilmore) McMillen.
Mr. McMillen grew up on the family farm in Knox, PA. He graduated from Ashland High School and the Clarion Teachers College in math and science.
He was first employed with the Pennsylvania Threshermans and Farmers Mutual Casualty Company, now known as Pennsylvania National Casualty Company, in Bradford, Pittsburgh, Erie, Western Pennsylvania, and Eastern Ohio. In 1971, he became manager of Moore and Eshelman which later became Burns, Burns and Associates at which time he became a vice president. He retired in September of 1990.
He was a CPCU (Chartered Property Casual Underwriter). Also, he taught insurance classes at Penn State University, DuBois Campus and served on the Pennsylvania Insurance Testing Commission for new agents.
A veteran of the US Army, he served during WW II.
Mr. McMillen was a life member of the Clearfield Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge #540 and the Clearfield YMCA. He was an avid golfer, reader and woodworker. His specialty with wood was to make wooden bowls from PA native woods as well as exotic woods. Many of the bowls he gave away as gifts.
He was involved in fundraising for the swimming program in Clearfield and made the first set of starting blocks for both the Clearfield Community Pool and the Clearfield YMCA.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene A. (Norbury) McMillen, whom he wed February 4, 1956, three children, Kevin McMillen and wife Joan of Clearfield; Kathy McMillen Tibbens and husband Larry of Portersville and Kellie McMillen Koerber and husband Ray of Trafford, four grandchildren, Lauren Tibbens, Kenneth Tibbens, Elaina Koerber, Harrison McMillen; and a sister, Kay Emrick of Knox.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Dee Jane Cotherman.
Friends will be received at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, 113 N. Third Street, Clearfield on Thursday from 10AM-Noon.
In accordance with Mr. McMillen's wishes, there will be no service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Ken McMillen Swimming Endowment in care of the Clearfield Community Charitable Foundation, Clearfield Bank and Trust Co., 11 N. Second Street, PO Box 171, Clearfield, PA 16830.
