Levis Read

Levis Read Jr., 87, of Clearfield died on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at the Penn Highlands Clearfield.

He was born on September 15, 1926 in Clearfield, a son of the late Levis Sr. and Pearl (Shaw) Read.

Mr. Read was employed as a mail carrier for the U.S Postal Service. He was the Assistant Scoutmaster of Cubmaster Pack I in 1960.

He was a member of Philipsburg Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and a past president of the Clearfield branch of Latter Day Saints. Mr. Read was a missionary to Kansas and Missouri for one year and to Washington DC and Kensington, MD for one year. He also held memberships with the National Association of Letter Carriers and the United Commercial Travelers. A veteran of WWII, he served with the U. S. Army.

He is survived by a son, David Read and wife Melody of Treasure Lake; three grandchildren, Jessica, Sean and Trevor; and four great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Doris J. (Lingle) Read on December 24, 2008 and whom he wed December 27, 1947; a son Gerald Read; two sisters, Lillian Shaffer and Gertrude Quinn; and a brother, Ray Read.

Funeral services will be held at the Kevin A Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield on Saturday at 11 AM with Branch President Robert Morrison officiating. Interment will be in the Crown Crest Memorial Park, Hyde.

Friends will be received at the funeral home on Saturday from 9-11 AM.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Gerald Read Scholarship Fund, c/o Clearfield County Charitable Foundation, PO Box 1442, Clearfield or to the charity of one's choice.
