Lula Ellen Kerr, 97, formerly of Indiana, PA and residing in Lakeland, FL, passed away Sunday, October 9, 2011.
Born June 2, 1914, at Black Lick, PA, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Elizabeth (Freed) Brothers.
On February 10, 1938, at her parents’ home in Black Lick, she wed Donald Francis Kerr, Sr., of Indiana, who preceded her in death on July 30, 1984.
A 1935 graduate of Indiana State Teacher’s College, she taught at the Blairsville High School. She was a former member of Grace United Methodist Church, Indiana where she taught Sunday school and was active in The Ruth Circle, United Methodist Women and the outreach mission of the church. She remained active in church activities at the Lakeland United Methodist Church in Florida. She was also a former member of the Indiana chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.
Mrs. Kerr was a homemaker whose friends and family alike enjoyed her gift of hospitality. A talented seamstress and knitter, she provided sweaters, hats, gloves, mittens, slippers, and outfits for Mr. Kerr, her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening and raised African Violets. She was a avid fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
She is survived by her three children; Donald Kerr Jr. and wife Toni Lee of McLean, VA and their children Donald III, Anton and Kathy; David Kerr and his wife Donna of Lakeland, FL and their sons Michael and James; Elizabeth ‘Lizz’ Kerr Kirsch and her husband Frank of Clearfield and their son Stephen; ten great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen and Mary; four brothers Roy, Walter, Clark and Andrew; and her step-mother Eunice Brothers.
Honoring Mrs. Kerr’s wishes, there will be no public visitation. A graveside memorial service and interment will be conducted at the Greenwood Cemetery, Garden of the Good Shepherd, in Indiana, PA on Thursday at 10 AM with the Rev. Kathy Mihoerck officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial contribution be made to the donor’s local food bank.
