M. Barrett

M. Elva Barrett, 92, of DuBois, and formerly of Curwensville, died on Sunday, December 20, 2009 at Christ the King Manor, DuBois.

She was born on July 16, 1917 in Curwensville, a daughter of the late James M. and Lydia (Hoffer) Wingert.

Mrs. Barrett retired as head librarian from the Curwensville Library after 17 years of service. Prior to that, she was employed at Clover Farm Store and the Herald Newspaper, both of Curwensville. She also worked for the War Department in New York City and Washington D.C. during the 1940's. She was a member of the Curwensville Presbyterian Church where she held many offices, sang in the choir, and taught Sunday school. She was a 50 year member the Clearfield Chapter #379 Order of the Eastern Star and a longtime member of the Curwensville Women's Club.

Mrs. Barrett served on the Curwensville Elementary School Board, was a volunteer for many Girl Scout Troops and was active with various 4 H clubs and the Clearfield County Extension Program. She was a Curwensville High School Band mother and sang in the Curwensville Community Choir.

A 1934 graduate of the Curwensville High School, she subsequently graduated from DuBois Business College and enjoyed flower gardening, ceramics and was an avid quilter.

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Baronak and her husband, Dennis, of Curwensville; two grandsons, Keith Baronak of Curwensville, and Bret Baronak of Jupiter, FL; and one great granddaughter, Kendra Baronak.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Barrett in July 1981 and whom she married June 6, 1947 at the Curwensville Presbyterian Church, and her sister Norma Thomas.

Funeral services will be held at the Curwensville Presbyterian Church on Wednesday at 11 AM with Gary Jewart officiating. Interment will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Curwensville.

Friends will be received at the church on Wednesday from 10 AM until the hour of services.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Curwensville Presbyterian Church, 430 Locust Street, Curwensville, the Curwensville Public Library, 601 Beech Street, Curwensville, or to the Curwensville Women's Club, c/o Sharon Aaron, 782 Ridge Avenue, Curwensville.
