Martha Frantz Crago, 84, a vice-president of her husbands firm, John R. Crago, Inc. died on Monday May 9, 2005 at the Willow Valley Retirement Community in Lancaster.
She was born on February 12, 1921 in Clearfield, PA, a daughter of the late Dr. J. Paul and Mary (Graff) Frantz.
Mrs. Crago served as President of the Clearfield Community Chest, Inc. as well as First Vice-President of its Board of Directors. She was a Board member of the Clearfield County - Philipsburg Tuberculosis Society; served as President of the Friends of the Shaw Public Library; on the Advisory Board of Women of the Clearfield Little League; as a Board Member and Vice-President of the Pennsylvania United Fund. In 1952, she was the recipient of a special Boy Scout award in recognition of her original production, Trees Grown Straight, a play which she wrote and directed for a state scout function held in the Dimeling Hotel ballroom. In 1955, she served as Chairman of the Clearfield Charity Ball, sponsored annually by the Women's Auxiliary of the Clearfield Hospital. In 1960, she was one of the first two women ever elected to the Clearfield YMCA Board of Directors, serving as Board Secretary until moving to Florida in 1970. An active member of St. John Lutheran Church, she received a request in 1975 to write a play depicting the Church history for presentation during the 125th Anniversary of its founding. The Solid Rock, presented on October 5, 1975, played to a receptive, enthusiastic audience. The history of St. John included in records of the Clearfield County Historical Society was written by Mrs. Crago.
As a Florida resident, she was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church of Winter Park, and performed with the Liberty Belles, an Orlando group organized by the local Music Club to commemorate the USA Bi-centennial in 1976 with musical presentations through the Central Florida area.
Mrs. Crago retired to Willow Valley Manor, Lancaster, PA in 1998.
She was a member of the Clearfield Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by three sons, John R. Crago, Jr. and wife Carol of Clearfield, J. Christopher Crago and wife Patricia of Clearfield and Andrew Frantz Crago and wife Carol of Orlando, FL, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren, two sisters, Mary Louise Frantz of Clearfield and Susan Johnson and husband Richard of Wethersfield, CT.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Crago, Sr. on August 26, 2004 and whom she married June 13, 1941 in St. John Lutheran Church, Clearfield and two brothers, Paul Frantz and John 'Jack' Frantz.
Funeral services will be held at The Presbyterian Church, Clearfield on Thursday at 11:00 A.M. with Dr. Douglas S. Pride officiating. Interment will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery, Clearfield.
Friends will be received at the church on Thursday from 9-11:00 AM
