Mary Butler

Mary C. Butler, 94, of Clearfield died on Monday, May 21, 2018 at Penn Highlands Clearfield.

She was born on July 10, 1923 in Wilmore, a daughter of the late David Strayer and Edythe (Harper) Lightner.

Mrs. Butler was employed as a teacher and then as a substitute teacher in the Clearfield School District. She was a graduate of the Hollidaysburg Area School District and had composed the Alma Mater for the Junior High. She continued her education at Indiana State Teachers College where she was a head majorette in the marching band. Her senior year at the college, she was the drum major for the famed marching band.
She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Clearfield. She was also a member of the Junior Woman's Club, the Chinklamoose Square Dance Club, founding member of P.A.R.C. (Parents Association of Retarded Children) and was involved with the Clearfield Education Association.

She is survived by five children; William D. Butler Jr. of Clearfield, Richard G. Butler and wife Betsy of Clearfield, Joy A. Lhota and husband Rick of Clearfield, Donald Lee Butler of Treasure Lake, and Thomas A. Butler and wife Debbie of Clearfield; nine grandchildren, Ethan Lott and wife Rebecca, Joanna Lott, Zachary Butler, Dr. Nathaniel Butler and wife Erin Kirkpatrick, Jordan Butler and husband Mike Snyder, Tyler Butler and wife Samantha, Rachel Grahamslaw and husband Jonathan, John Lhota, Sarah Proudfit and husband Cory; and nine great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William D. Butler Sr. on June 30, 2012; and five siblings, Sarah Kaufman, Herbert Lightner, Harriet Roberts, Randolph Lightner and Charles Lightner.

Funeral services will be held at the St. John Lutheran Church, Clearfield on Friday at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Robert Way officiating. Interment will be in the Mt. Joy Cemetery, Clearfield.

Friends will be received at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield on Thursday from 4-7 P.M. and at the church on Friday from 10-11 A.M.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. John Lutheran Church, PO Box 1545, Clearfield, PA 16830.
