Myrtle K. Shirey, of State College and formerly of Woodland, died on April 5, 2011 at the home of her daughter, Nancy Hopkins.
She was born on October 30, 1910 in Shawville, to the late Eliza Jane Livingston Kyler and Joseph Kyler.
She was a homemaker and active partner in the Shirey family farm. Following her husband’s death, she continued to operate his business, Shirey Tractor Service, for 11 years, retiring in 1981.
Myrtle was a devoted and active member of the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church where, for many years, she taught Sunday school and served as church and Sunday school treasurer as well as many other positions in the church. Also for many years, she was a volunteer for the American Red Cross and the Clearfield Hospital chaplain service.
After moving to State College in 2003, she attended St. Paul’s United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class, Ruth Circle, Laos Study Group and the afternoon knitting group.
Myrtle was a wonderful, loving mother to her daughter, Nancy and son-in-law Fred Hopkins of State College, and son, David and daughter-in-law LaRee Shirey of Albuquerque, NM. She had three grandchildren, Jacqualine Huntsman and Chris Shirey of Albuquerque, NM, and James Hopkins of State College. She also had six great-grandchildren, Christopher and Victoria Huntsman and Jeremy and Emily Shirey all of Albuquerque, NM, and Adam and Jacob Hopkins of State College.
For 31 years, Myrtle was a devoted and loving wife to Harold W. Shirey, who passed away in 1970. She was also preceded in death by bothers Egbert, Carl, J. Clair, Guy and Richard Kyler, and sisters Kathryn Yeager, Alma Riffel, Helen Kyler and Esther Kyler.
Funeral services will be held at the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church, Woodland on Saturday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Sean Patrick Smith and Rev. Dr. G. Edwin Zeiders officiating. Burial will be in Bradford Cemetery, Woodland.
Friends will be received at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield on Friday from 6-8 PM and at church on Saturday from 10-11 AM.
