Ada Ruth Howe Yingling, age 99 of Clearfield, PA, began eternal rest on June 25, 2023.
Ruth Howe was born to Orvis V. and Adda George Howe on August 7, 1923 in Winburne, PA. In 1929, the family moved to Robertsdale, PA where Ruth was raised.
She graduated from Roberstdale High School in 1941 as valedictorian of her class.
She then attended nursing school at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia and graduated as an RN in 1944. Ruth then joined the Navy and served in the nursing corps throughout the end of WWII.
After the war, she worked as a night supervisor in the Obstetrics Department at Philadelphia Lying-In Hospital. She spent a period of time working on research projects in her field at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD.
On February 11, 1950 Ruth married the love of her life Dr. Nathaniel (Rip) D. Yingling, and followed him to Germany in 1951 as part of the armed forces. After this time in Europe, the Yinglings moved to Nashville, TN where Dr. Yingling finished his training as a general surgeon and Ruth began her life’s work of raising five children. In 1956 they made their forever home in Clearfield, PA. For the next 40 years, Ruth helped her husband support, build, and grow the Clearfield Hospital and raise her five sons to adulthood.
Ruth’s thirst for travel was awakened while living in Europe, and over her life she had set foot on six continents and well over 100 countries. For the last part of her life, she always enjoyed and reveled in family reunions and gatherings.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband on November 18,1998, three brothers Charles, George, and Eugene, and an infant sister Margaret. She was the last of her generation.
She is survived by five sons. Nathaniel D. (Andy) Yingling Jr. (Susan) of Pittsburgh, PA, Dr. Douglas B. Yingling (Barbara) of Clearfield, PA, Dr. Thomas H. Yingling (Barbara) of Lancaster, PA, John P. Yingling (Debra) of Clearfield, PA, and Michael G. Yingling (Georgiana) of Schererville, IN. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations should be directed towards Trinity United Methodist Church in Clearfield, the Clearfield American Legion, or Clearfield Hospital Nurses Alumni, 2541 Meadow Road, Clearfield.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Clearfield on Monday, August 7, 2023 at 11 AM with Rev. Jonathan Morningstar and Dr. C. Frederick Ralston officiating. A luncheon will follow.
Friends will be received at the church on Monday from 10:30 - 11 AM.
