Walter Kowaleski

February 22, 1919 — October 12, 2004

Walter E. Kowaleski, 85

of Clearfield and formerly of Somerset died on Tuesday, October 12, 2004 at Riverside Hospital in Columbus, OH.

He was born on February 22, 1919 in Mount Pleasant, PA, a son of the late Lewis and Sophie Kowaleski.

Mr. Kowaleski retired in March of 1984 from the Federal Bureau of Mines. He also was self employed in the coal mine business in Somerset, PA.
He served with the US Army Ninth Division during WW II having attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was involved in the Invasion of Normandy in June of 1944 and earned two bronze stars and several ribbons.
He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, Clearfield, the Clearfield American Legion John Lewis Shade Post# 6 and the F. Michael Sicks Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1785 of Clearfield.

He is survived by two children,
Richard J. Kowalewski (this is correct spelling) and wife Sherry Warsaw, OH
Judy Zazworsky and husband Lee Granville, OH

six grandchildren,
Richard Kowalewski, Jr. and wife Julie Florence, KY
Sean, Ryan and Kevin Kowalewski all of Warsaw, OH
David and Jessica Zazworsky both of Atlanta, GA

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six sisters and six brothers.

Mass of Christian Burial will be said at St. Francis Catholic Church, Clearfield on Saturday at 10:00 A.M. with Rev. Msgr. Henry L. Krebs as celebrant. Committal services and interment will be at 2:00 PM in the Memorial Park, Somerset.

Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the members of the Somerset County Honor Guard.

Friends will be received at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield on Friday from
2-4 & 6-8 PM.

A Christian vigil service will be recited at the funeral home on Friday at 3:45 PM.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made the Clearfield Senior Citizens Center, 103 North Front Street, Clearfield.
