William E. 'Bill' McCartney, 80, of Clearfield, passed away on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at Ridgeview Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Curwensville, surrounded by his family.
Bill was born March 7, 1945, in Pittsburgh, the son of the late Robert and Eleanor (Brown) McCartney.
He graduated from Penn Hills High School in 1963, and then graduated from Grove City College in 1967 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. He was employed by Harbison Walker Refractories, and then worked for Caterpillar as a heavy equipment salesman for Beckwith Machinery. He was known as 'High Pockets' to his customers. Bill also sold John Deere equipment for Foster Wineland in Ridgway, as well as a code enforcement officer for Clearfield Borough.
Bill was an active member of Clearfield Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Deacon, Trustee, youth group leader and Usher. He also was a member of the church's Pairs and Spares Sunday school class and the men's Monday luncheon group. He also loved going to the beach with the church youth group kids for 20 years, where he was known as 'Big Dog' to them.
He enjoyed Nascar racing, the stock market, and reading the paper. Bill loved to talk to people and going out to eat.
Bill was a member of BPOE 540 Elks lodge and enjoyed playing basketball at the YMCA in his younger years. He attended all his daughters' sporting events and activities. Other hobbies of Bill's includes going to car shows, logging shows, and equipment shows. He loved all the Pittsburgh sports teams (Penguins, Steelers, Pirates) and worked at Forbes field as a kid. Bill enjoyed taking care of his vehicles. Family was important to him, and he loved his daughters and grandchildren dearly.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Charlene (Mang) McCartney, whom he married in 1967; three daughters, Sharon Gaston and husband Bob, Kathy Miller and significant other Mike Mann, and Sue Coulter and husband Herb; four grandchildren, Rachel and Sara Gaston, and Seth and Adam Miller. He is also survived by three brothers-in-law, Robert Mang, James Mang and wife Linda, and John Mang and wife Tammie; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Robert McCartney and his late wife Betty.
A funeral service will be held at The Presbyterian Church, Clearfield on Monday, March 17, 2025 at 1:00 PM.
Viewing for friends and family will be held at the church on Monday, March 17, 2025 from 11 AM - 1 PM.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Clearfield Pre-School Center at the Presbyterian Church, 119 N. 2nd Street, Clearfield.
