William F. "Bill" Litz, 85, of Litz Bridge, Clearfield died on Monday, December 10, 2007 at Ridgeview Elder Care Rehabilitation Center in Curwensville.
He was born on June 6, 1922 in Litz Bridge, Clearfield, a son of the late Frank S. and Martha (Tiedgen) Litz.
For 42 years Mr. Litz worked at the Harbison Walker Refractories of Clearfield as a press feeder for the No. 3 brickyard and served several times as a union officer for the United Steelworkers Union.
For three years during World War II he was a T/4 tank driver for the 70th tank battalion in the battles and campaigns of Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He received a good conduct medal, a distinguished unit badge, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with six Bronze Stars.
He served on the Philipsburg-Osceola School board for 7 years and he led a fund drive and campaign to add a wing on to the Clearfield Hospital.
He belonged to the Clearfield American Legion John Lewis Shade Post #6, the F. Michael Sicks Veteran's of Foreign Wars Post #1785 and the Disabled American Veteran's Association for most of his life.
He enjoyed forestry, hobby farming, construction projects, vehicles and equipment restoration along with hunting, fishing, dancing and most of all he enjoyed and cherished all children.
He is survived by two sons, Larry B. Litz and wife Ethel of Browning, MO and Monty S. Litz and wife Patricia of Spring Mills, a daughter-in-law, Kathy Litz of Lincoln, MI; seven grandchildren, Deborah A. Litz Beard of Cohoctah, MI, William R. Litz of Fowlervilleville, MI, David A. Litz of Farmington Hills, MI, Stacy L. Soltys of Clearfield, Billie Jo Litz of Browning, MO, Adam H. Litz of Spring Mills and Brice H. Litz of Spring Mills; 10 great grandchildren; a sister and a brother, Margaret O'Donnell of Clearfield and Edwin Litz and wife Helen of Clearfield; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Alice J. 'Red' (Smeal) Litz on November 15, 1995 and whom he married February 14, 1942 in DuBois, a son, William L. Litz, a granddaughter, Lori Ann Litz, brothers, Rex, Noel, Gerald and Ray Litz and sisters, Jean LoPresti, Mary Kelly and Annabell Aveni.
Funeral services will be held at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield on Friday at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Rodger J. Gorton officiating. Interment will follow in the Crown Crest Memorial Park, Hyde.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the members of the Clearfield American Legion Post #6 and Clearfield VFW Post #1785 honor guard.
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Thursday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM and on Friday from 10-11:00 AM.
