William Harry Bill Polkinghorn, Sr., 86, of Clearfield and one of Penn States biggest fans, lost his battle with cancer on Sunday, October 14, 2007 at the Mountain Laurel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Clearfield.
He was born on April 14, 1921 in Woodland, a son of the late Charles A. and Grace (Henchbarger) Polkinghorn.
Mr. Polkinghorn was employed by The Progress for thirty six years.
He was a 1942 graduate of Clearfield High School and was a member of the Golden Bison Association. He was also a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Clearfield, the International Typographical Union, the American Association of Retired People, the United Commercial Travelers and a past member of the Clearfield Lions Club. He was a charter member of the Keystone Travel Trailer Club and a member of the Clear Du Trailer Club, Family Campers and RVers and the Good Sam Trailer Club.
Bill adored his friends and community especially his breakfast club at Billy Burger.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, Bill proudly fought for his country during WW II and was a member of the Clearfield American Legion John Lewis Shade Post #6.
He will be greatly missed by his wife of 61 years, Marcia (Lennox) Polkinghorn, whom he wed September 4, 1946; a son, William H. Polkinghorn, Jr. and his wife Vicki of Stillwater, MN; three granddaughters, Karin of New York, and Kristin and Kellie both of MN; a great granddaughter, Taylor; one nephew and two nieces, and special friends and grandchildren, the Strittmatters, Cindy and Mark, Hunter and Evan, whom he loved as if they were his own.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Charles V. Polkinghorn.
Funeral services will be held at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield on Friday at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Kenneth R. Pry officiating. Interment will follow in the Crown Crest Memorial Park, Hyde.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the members of the Clearfield American Legion Post #6 and the Clearfield VFW Post #1785 honor guard.
Friends will be received at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8:00 PM and on Friday from 10 - 11:00 AM.
